Global gold supremo faces its critics

Indigenous representatives from Porgera, Papua New Guinea, traveled to Canada last week to speak at Barrick Gold’s annual general meeting (AGM).

They were joined by other shareholders who protested at operations by the world’s leading gold company elsewhere around the world.

African Barrick – the company now listed in London and spun off by Barrick (but with the Canadian parent holding the majority of shares)- had its own AGM last week too, although no protestors got inside the meeting.

Barry Sergeant of Mineweb (21 April 2011) had an interesting insight into the escalating costs for

Canada gets Cuddly with Mining Companies

Critics are asking whether, with the defeat of Bill C-300, whether the Canadian government is getting too comfortable with the country’s mining, gas and oil companies. Image by Caitlin Crawshaw.
HALIFAX—Despite the death of Bill C-300, which would have introduced accountability for Canadian mining, oil or gas corporations operating in developing countries, watchdog groups are sounding the alarm louder than ever over what they see as a conflict of interest in the government.

"Whoever Opposes Mining is Seen as a Terrorist"-Wikileaks on the US and Peru

A Wikileaks cable reveals the US Embassy in Lima, Peru, identified Indigenous activists and tracked the involvement of Bolivian President Evo Morales, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Bolivia Ambassador Pablo Solon, prominent Quechua activist Miguel Palacin Quispe and community leaders.

Since the writing of this cable, the bonds with Native Americans and First Nations have grown stronger in the struggles for justice. Bolivian President Morales and Ambassador Solon were in the forefront of the Indigenous global climate change efforts in 2010.

Canadian mining companies worst abusers in developing world:

OTTAWA—Canadian mining companies are far and away the worst offenders in environmental, human rights and other abuses around the world, according to a global study commissioned by an industry association but never made public.

“Canadian companies have been the most significant group involved in unfortunate incidents in the developing world,” the report obtained by the Toronto Star concludes.

“Canadian companies have played a much more major role than their peers from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States” in these incidents, says the Canadian Centre for the Study

Indigenous Leaders from Papua New Guinea Accuse Barrick Gold of Abuses

(Ottawa) Four members of the Ipili tribe of Porgera in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have travelled to Canada to demand that Barrick Gold address serious human rights abuses and environmental destruction related to Barrick’s Porgera Joint Venture gold mine. Two of the Ipili are landowners and also part-owners of the Porgera Joint Venture mine.

Long-standing allegations of killings and rapes of civilians by security forces at Barrick’s PNG mine have been confirmed recently by the findings of a team of investigators from Harvard University who reported to Canadian Parliamentarians in 2009.

Munk takes on mine protestors, defends capitalism

Mark Ekepa journeyed from Papua New Guinea to tell the shareholders of Barrick Gold Corp. how police had burned down his house near the Barrick’s Porgera mine.

Idolia Bornones travelled from Chile to say that Barrick operations are damaging local glaciers and rivers.

But Barrick chairman Peter Munk was unrepentant as he faced the company’s annual meeting.

Even before the visitors had a chance to speak, Munk delivered an unapologetic defence of Barrick’s role in improving the lives of people around the world.
