Canada’s most recent positioning during UN debates on indigenous peoples rights has left one of the main players with the commission delving into the dark history of residential schools wondering if he can ever reconcile with this country.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission Commissioner Willie Littlechild said Canada recently argued that the collective rights of indigenous peoples were not human rights.

Geneva Switzerland – Today, September 30th, 2010, the 15th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted without a vote a resolution to renew the mandate and change the name of the former “UN Rapporteur on the situation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Indigenous People”. This human rights mandate is currently held by Professor James Anaya, and will now be called “the UN Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples”. The US and Great Britain made statements explaining their votes, but joined the consensus to vote in favor.

ALDERVILLE, FN – Anishinabek Chiefs in Assembly have overwhelmingly approved the traditional values underlying Ngo Dwe Waangizid Anishinbaabe — the Constitution of the 39 member First Nations.

Created in Anishinaabemowin – the Ojibwe language – by a group of Elders meeting on Manitoulin Island, the document says “The Creator placed the Anishinaabe on the earth”, describing as “sacred gifts to guide them” the Seven Grandfather Teachings of Love, Truth, Respect, Wisdom, Humility, Honesty and Bravery.

UN rejects Bangladesh government's view

The general segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) session rejected the official position of Bangladesh government on the non-Bangalee people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), and adopted the report of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

The Bangladesh government, represented by Abul Kalam Abdul Momen, raised its concern over the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) going beyond its mandate in dealing with the issue of implementing the CHT Peace Accord, on the ground that there are no indigenous people in CHT.

We are referred to in different names such as ethnic minorities, hilltribes, indigenous communities, orang asli, orang asal, ethnic groups, ethnic nationalities, masyarakat adat, among others. However, we share common historical injustices of marginalization, exclusion, discrimination, forced assimilation.

The government needs to pay more attention to human rights of people in every community as human rights violation amounts to the violation of democracy.
