Botswana bushmen: 'If you deny us the right to hunt, you are killing us'

The San people are reaching out to Prince Charles to help overturn new laws threatening their tribal culture

It costs £500 a night to stay in a luxury safari camp in the Kalahari desert in Botswana. For that price, wealthy tourists get drinks, game drives and, says one tour company, an “interpretive Bushman walk with staff members who hail from the ancient Bushman clans of the area”.

Colombia halts mining multinationals in indigenous territory

A judge suspended Monday all activities by mining companies in nearly 50,000 hectares of indigenous lands in northwest Colombia, reported local media.

In an “unprecedented” ruling, all mining and exploration activities in 49,421 acres of territories belonging to indigenous Embera Katio communities have been halted for up to six months due to a failure to consult and protect the communities, according to El Tiempo.

“[This decision] only seeks to prevent the continued violation of the rights of indigenous peoples on their territory [arising from] disproportionate use by people outside the

Navajo President Ben Shelly spoke today, Sept. 21, in Geneva at the UN Human Rights Council, urging a halt to the use of wastewater on sacred San Francisco Peaks by the Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff, Arizona.

President Shelly said the Navajo Nation had forwarded its opposition to Special Rapporteur James Anaya who provided a detailed written report to UN Human Rights Council on the assaults on San Francisco Peaks.

Sharing power – the end of ‘fortress’ conservation?

Will conservation organisations finally take practical action to implement agreed commitments that recognise the rights of indigenous peoples in protected areas?

Over the last 10 years governments and conservation organisations have made significant commitments to uphold the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities in protected area policies and activities. However, on the ground, the impoverishment of indigenous peoples and the displacement from their ancestral homelands due to protected areas are still the hidden costs of conservation.

Kenya: Landmark Ruling on Indigenous Land Rights

African Human Rights Commission Condemns Expulsion of Endorois People for Tourism Development

New York – A ruling by the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights condemning the expulsion of the Endorois people from their land in Kenya is a major victory for indigenous peoples across Africa, Human Rights Watch, WITNESS, and the Endorois’ lawyers said today.

Why They Kill the Awá

It is overcome by pain and sadness that we write these lines. We write from the shared rage we feel towards this criminal act, apparently committed by the FARC, whom we condemn for these irreversible horrors and the shedding of innocent blood.

As we write, the Colombian Minister of Defense, Juan Manuel Santos, is arriving in the Department of Nariño to conduct the military operations that constitute the government’s response to the massacres and terror these indigenous communities are now facing.
