Learning from the Millennium Development Goals and leaving no one behind

The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Post-2015 Development Agenda aspire to “leave no one behind.” The Indigenous Peoples Major Group (IPMG), however, notes with concern that many references to “indigenous peoples” were deleted in the final Outcome Document of the Open-ended Working Group on the SDGs (OWG) to be considered for adoption by the UN General Assembly.

Historic day as Koongarra protected from uranium mining

CANBERRA: The Australian Conservation Foundation has warmly welcomed the introduction of federal legislation to permanently protect Koongarra, a distinct and special part of the Kakadu region, from the threat of uranium mining.

The legislation introduced today is to repeal the Koongarra Project Area Act – an Act created to allow uranium mining after Koongarra was excluded from Kakadu’s original boundaries in 1979.

Anishinabek commit to completing constitutional work

ALDERVILLE, FN – Anishinabek Chiefs in Assembly have overwhelmingly approved the traditional values underlying Ngo Dwe Waangizid Anishinbaabe — the Constitution of the 39 member First Nations.

Created in Anishinaabemowin – the Ojibwe language – by a group of Elders meeting on Manitoulin Island, the document says “The Creator placed the Anishinaabe on the earth”, describing as “sacred gifts to guide them” the Seven Grandfather Teachings of Love, Truth, Respect, Wisdom, Humility, Honesty and Bravery.

With Asia becoming the new economic hub for extractive industries and foreign investments, landgrabbing of indigenous lands is now becoming the order of the day such as in India, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia. The growing physical and economic displacement of indigenous peoples is being ignored inspite of the protests and objections of indigenous communities.
