UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) — An independent United Nations human rights expert on Wednesday urged the Peruvian Government and indigenous leaders in the country’s southeast to hold peaceful dialogue to resolve the deadly conflict over mining and oil development.

JULIACA, PERU — As smoke rose from burning tires and torched security vehicles, heavily armed police confronted nearly a thousand angry anti-mining protesters walking the runaway of Juliaca’s airport in southern Peru, near Lake Titicaca. One protest leader called for the group to reclaim the airport. Others said it was too dangerous.

Peru’s election on Sunday of left-leaning is generally viewed as bad news for the country’s mining industry. Indeed, Lima’s stock market–which primarily trades mining and minerals companies–-promptly crashed on Monday following the election. The concern is that Humala–seen by some, erroneously, as the second-coming of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez–will nationalize mining operations and/or impose major new mining taxes, thus scaring off investment in Peru’s most important economic sector. These fears seem unfounded.

Peru: Indigenous protests erupt in city of Puno

Thousands of angry indigenous protesters have taken over the city centre of Puno in south-eastern Peru.

Looters have taken advantage of the unrest and ransacked offices and shops as the police retreated.

Cars and buildings were torched on Thursday night when protesters went on the rampage, demanding an end to a Canadian silver mining project.

The indigenous Aymara activists say the mining company will pollute their ancestral lands.

The protesters have blocked the main roads into the city.

A customs office was set ablaze on Friday and several other buildings are still smouldering
