The Arctic Declaration approved on the UN day October 24th the arctic caucus finalized and approved their statement to the UN World Conference on Indigenous Peoples in 2014, as the first one of the seven Indigenous regions in the world, in Nuuk, Greenland.

The Sami delegation travelled this week to Greenland to meet with their peers in the Arctic Caucus. On the agenda was the finalizing of the arctic declaration as well as discussions on the process to the Indigenous Peoples Global Preparatory Conference in Alta 2013.

The process of preparation to the UN World Indigenous World Conference in 2014 has started a while ago with the Inari declaration approved by the Sami preparatory meeting in June this year as the first step and today, October 24th, the Nuuk declaration was approved after two days of finalizing work of the document.

This statement is to be joined together with the six other declarations from the remaining indigenous caucuses, and then to be finalized in to one common document that is to be approved at the Indigenous Peoples Global Preparatory Conference in Alta in June 2013, and then to be presented as a common declaration of the World Indigenous peoples at the 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples at the UN.

The GCG (Global Coordinating Group) has realized that the final drafting of the outcome document is going to be an enormous task, and has thus initiated a Global Editorial Committee to shape the final document. The Arctic Caucus has nominated the Sami representative Mattias Åhrén and the Inuit representative Dalee Sambo-Dorough to this editorial group.
